A QUICK START

A little guidance, right when you need it.

DotsDashes is a free Morse code translator for written text and written dots and dashes. Type a message to encode it, or switch direction to decode Morse back into letters. You can listen to the signal and copy a plain-text result without creating an account.

  1. Choose Text → Morse to encode a message, or Morse → Text to decode a written signal.

  2. Enter your text. In Morse input, separate letters with a space and words with a slash (/).

  3. Check the result, listen at a comfortable speed, then copy it. For a sound file, open the audio generator.

How to read dots, dashes and spaces

A dot is a short signal and a dash is a longer signal. The order matters: A is (.-) and N is (-.). Spaces matter just as much. The sequence ... --- ... reads SOS when those three letters are separated. A continuous run of dots and dashes can be ambiguous without letter boundaries.

This translator writes one space between letters and / between words. Line breaks in Morse input separate letters; they do not create a word boundary. Common typographic dots (· and •) and dashes (−, – and —) are accepted and normalized. The output uses ordinary periods and hyphens so it is easy to copy into another tool.

Listen to Morse code at your own speed

Press Play signal to hear your message. The character speed is measured in words per minute (WPM), using the PARIS timing convention. Start slowly if you are learning, and adjust the tone if a higher or lower pitch is more comfortable. Nothing plays automatically.

In international Morse timing, a dot lasts one unit and a dash lasts three. Gaps inside a character last one unit, between letters three units, and between words seven units. The audio generator adds Farnsworth spacing when you want fast character sounds with longer pauses for recognition.

What this translator can—and cannot—decode

Use it for a written puzzle, a name, a classroom example or a message you want to hear. It supports A–Z, 0–9 and the punctuation shown in the reference. Lowercase English is converted to uppercase, and repeated whitespace is normalized.

Unknown characters and unrecognized Morse groups are marked instead of silently discarded. Fix those entries before copying or playing the complete message. This page does not transcribe recordings, recognize flashing video, crack an unspaced signal or translate between human languages. Chinese characters need a separate encoding system and are not converted automatically.

GOOD QUESTIONS

A few things you might be wondering

Where can I translate Morse code and hear it without signing up?

Use the tool at the top of this page. Enter English letters or numbers, press Play signal to listen, and Copy result to take the dots and dashes. The conversion runs in your browser.

How do I translate Morse code into English letters?

Choose Morse → Text and paste the dots and dashes. Put a space between each character and a slash between words. For example, .... .. becomes HI. The tool decodes characters; it does not translate another language into English.

Why does my Morse code produce an error?

Check for missing letter spaces, a dot or dash typed incorrectly, or unsupported symbols. The message identifies the position of the first problem. A long, unseparated sequence may not be a valid single character.

Is SOS written as three letters or one signal?

As ordinary text, SOS is ... --- ... with letter gaps. The distress prosign is sent continuously as ...---... without those letter gaps. This translator plays ordinary letters; the two timing patterns are different. It is not an emergency signaling service.

Is my message uploaded or saved?

The translator processes your input on your device and does not send it to our server or save it in browser storage. Copying, downloading or sharing a file is an action you choose. The site still needs a network connection to load.
